Fiction

Our top choice: Endling by Maria Reva
Endling narrates the experiences of three women whose lives are impacted by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Yeva, a scientist, is fixated on breeding rare snails, supporting her research by dating Westerners visiting Ukraine on romance tours. Sisters Nastia and Solomiya are also immersed in the marriage industry as they seek answers about their mother’s disappearance. With the onset of war, their plans are disrupted, shedding light on the harsh realities of conflict.
Maria Reva, a native of Ukraine who was raised in New Westminster, B.C., and currently resides there, received the 2022 Kobzar Literary Award for her short story collection Good Citizens Need Not Fear. The collection was also a finalist for the 2020 Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize. Reva’s debut novel, Endling, was longlisted for the 2025 Booker Prize and shortlisted for the Atwood Gibson Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize. Furthermore, Reva is set to serve as a jury member for the 2026 CBC Short Story Prize.
