“Study Warns of Health Risks from Fracking in B.C.”

Date:

Researchers presented findings to the City of Dawson Creek council on February 9 regarding the potential health risks associated with oil and gas activities in northeast B.C. Dr. Ulrike Meyer, a local family physician with over 30 years of experience, expressed concern about the increased incidence of rare cancers, attributing them to exposure to contaminants from nearby fracking operations.

Dr. Meyer highlighted a significant number of lung biopsies conducted in the summer of 2023, with 23 out of 25 showing positive results for cancer. Additionally, ten cases of idiopathic interstitial fibrosis were diagnosed from 2016 to 2018 in a population of just over 12,000, a rate that raised alarms among health professionals.

The researchers, including Dr. Élyse Caron-Beaudoin and Dr. Margaret McGregor, emphasized the potential dangers of fracking chemicals contaminating water and air, leading to cellular damage linked to various health issues such as cancer, respiratory problems, and adverse birth outcomes. They referenced studies indicating heightened risks for fetal growth impairment, premature birth, congenital malformations, childhood cancer, and heart disease in populations residing near fracking sites.

Councilor Jerimy Earl acknowledged the importance of discussing the matter sensitively, recognizing the economic reliance of many Dawson Creek residents on the oil and gas industry. He assured the public of the city’s commitment to prioritize health and safety, mentioning the installation of additional air quality monitors and the availability of water treatment records for researchers.

The research team plans to continue examining health outcomes in the Peace region related to fracking activities, stressing the need for a thorough understanding of the industry’s health impacts and effective mitigation strategies. Dr. McGregor underscored the importance of ongoing research in raising awareness about the potential health risks associated with the gas industry.
