Community members in Star Blanket Cree Nation experienced a significant event as they welcomed a herd of bison back to their lands over the recent May long weekend. The arrival of the bison, a species once common in the area, marked a historic moment for the community located about 100 kilometers northeast of Regina.
Sharon Strongarm, who attended the bison release with her grandchildren, expressed the emotional impact of witnessing the animals take their first steps on the land. She described the event as spiritual and highlighted the importance of reintroducing the buffalo to their community.
Ariane Starblanket, the community navigator and project manager for the bison release, shared that her late grandfather, a former chief of Star Blanket, had envisioned the return of bison as a means of healing and promoting food sovereignty within the community. The project, initially part of community safety plan initiatives, evolved to involve youth in caring for the buffalo as a way to foster cultural restoration and land stewardship.
Tristan Starr-Desnomie, one of the selected bison keepers, expressed his honor in being chosen for the role and highlighted the responsibilities involved in caring for the bison herd, emphasizing the importance of daily check-ups and ensuring the animals’ well-being.
As the bison settled into their new environment, caretaker Austin Elliott noted their growing familiarity with their surroundings and highlighted the unique behaviors of bison compared to other livestock. Looking ahead, the community plans to expand the bison’s habitat, with hopes of the herd eventually providing essential resources to the people of Star Blanket Cree Nation.
The return of the bison symbolizes a significant cultural and environmental milestone for the community, empowering future generations to appreciate the heritage and significance of these iconic animals.
