“Sleep Experts Warn Against Permanent Daylight Time in BC”

Date:

Scientists specializing in sleep research are cautioning against British Columbia’s move to permanently adopt daylight time due to potential adverse effects on overall health, particularly for children. Myriam Juda, a sleep researcher and adjunct professor at Simon Fraser University, emphasized the global scientific community’s preference for permanent standard time over daylight saving time, citing concerns about health and safety implications.

The shift to daylight time in British Columbia, set to take effect this weekend, will mark a permanent transition without future clock adjustments. Stanford University’s Professor Jamie Zeitzer, whose research was referenced by the B.C. government in the announcement, expressed unease about the decision, highlighting the negative impact on health and the scientific rationale supporting standard time.

Standard time aligns sunlight exposure more evenly throughout the day, whereas daylight saving time, by moving the clock forward an hour, reduces morning light and increases afternoon light. This alteration can disrupt the body’s circadian rhythm, affecting sleep patterns. Juda explained that morning light exposure plays a crucial role in regulating melatonin release, impacting alertness and fatigue levels, especially in teenagers.

The potential consequences of permanent daylight time, particularly in regions like Vancouver and Victoria, where dark winter mornings are prevalent, include delayed sunrises, impacting activities like children walking to school or commuters lacking morning light exposure. Juda estimated that most British Columbians could lose nearly half an hour of sleep nightly under the new regime.

Furthermore, daylight time may lead to “social jet lag,” causing a misalignment between daily routines and natural light cycles, resulting in grogginess and potential health issues over time. Zeitzer’s U.S. research team linked circadian misalignment to various health problems, advocating for the health benefits of permanent standard time over daylight time.

Although public support for permanent daylight saving time was high in British Columbia, with limited evening daylight offering benefits for outdoor activities and safer commutes, concerns raised by scientists like Zeitzer emphasize the importance of considering the impact on health. The government’s decision not to include permanent standard time as an option was justified by the lack of neighboring jurisdictions considering such a move.

While economic benefits like extended daylight hours for recreational activities were acknowledged, Zeitzer stressed the need for a more comprehensive evaluation of potential health impacts. The decision-making process lacked consultation with scientific sources regarding the choice of daylight time over standard time, raising questions about the considerations involved in the decision-making process.
