“Sinners” Leads 98th Oscars with Record 16 Nominations

Date:

The nominations for the 98th Academy Awards were unveiled on Thursday morning, with the film “Sinners” making a mark in Oscars history. Garnering a remarkable 16 nominations, it surpassed the previous records set by “All About Eve,” “Titanic,” and “La La Land.” The film, acclaimed for Ryan Coogler’s writing and direction, as well as Michael B. Jordan’s performance, received nods in categories ranging from directing to acting (marking Jordan’s debut Oscar nomination) to best picture.

“Sinners” was not the only standout, as “One Battle After Another” and the Norwegian film “Sentimental Value” also had a strong showing. The latter secured an impressive nine nominations, a notable achievement for a non-English language film. Additionally, foreign language films like “One Battle” and “Sentimental Value” are competing for best picture for the eighth consecutive year. Both films are also in contention for the Oscars’ newly introduced category after 25 years: achievement in casting.

The initial nominations for Best Supporting Actress went to Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas for “Sentimental Value,” Amy Madigan for “Weapons,” Wunmi Mosaku for “Sinners,” and Teyana Taylor for “One Battle After Another.”

The highlight of the ceremony was the announcement of the Best Picture nominees, which included “Bugonia,” “F1,” “Frankenstein,” “Hamnet,” “Marty Supreme,” “One Battle After Another,” “The Secret Agent,” “Sentimental Value,” “Sinners,” and “Train Dreams.”

While there were few surprises in the nominations, some unexpected twists were noted. “Wicked: For Good” missed out completely, with Delroy Lindo from “Sinners” securing a Supporting Actor nomination instead of the anticipated Miles Caton. Notably, “F1” emerged as a potential contender with four nominations, including a Best Picture nod, while “Avatar: Fire and Ash” received only two nominations in technical categories.

“One Battle After Another” came close to setting another Oscars record by earning four acting nominations, falling just short of the five needed to match a record last achieved in 1976 by “Network.” Notably, Kate Hudson received a nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance in “Song Sung Blue,” replacing Chase Infiniti from “One Battle.”

Following closely behind were “Hamnet” and “Marty Supreme,” with eight and nine nominations, respectively. Jessie Buckley from “Hamnet” is a frontrunner for Best Actress, having already won at the Critics Choice and Golden Globes. Timothée Chalamet, the lead in “Marty Supreme,” is in contention for Best Actor, a category he previously won at the Golden Globes.

The 98th Academy Awards, set for March 15 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and hosted by Conan O’Brien, promise an exciting showcase of talent and competition.
