To secure the year-end No. 1 ranking, Sinner must win the season-ending tournament for the top eight players and rely on Carlos Alcaraz not making it to the final.
Auger-Aliassime, ranked No. 8, seemed hampered by a left calf injury that surfaced towards the end of the first set. He received medical treatment twice during the second set. Sinner acknowledged the challenge of facing Auger-Aliassime until 6-5 when the Canadian experienced physical issues.
Last year, Sinner claimed the Turin title without dropping a set and has remained undefeated at the event since losing in the 2023 final to Novak Djokovic. Fans held up a sign declaring Sinner as “Italian pride,” and he was cheered on with soccer-like chants post-match.
Sinner has won all four encounters with Auger-Aliassime this year, including a U.S. Open semifinal and the recent Paris Masters final. In the Bjorn Borg group, Sinner and Alexander Zverev top the standings with one win each, following Zverev’s victory over Ben Shelton.
The top two players from each group will progress to the semifinals. Sinner showcased an impressive first-serve performance, winning 89% of points when landing his first serve, securing 32 out of 36 points. Despite the challenge posed by strong servers in his group, Sinner emphasized the need for constant focus during matches.
In an earlier match, Taylor Fritz defeated late entry Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 6-4. Fritz, unlike Musetti who was debuting, has a strong tournament history, having reached the final last year and the semifinals in his debut in 2022. Fritz highlighted the importance of his victory for advancing from the group stage, especially adapting to Musetti’s unique playing style.
