“Rugby Canada Surpasses Fundraising Goal for World Cup Victory”

Date:

Rugby Canada has successfully surpassed its fundraising target with the “Mission: Win Rugby World Cup 2025” campaign, raising over $1 million. This amount, combined with the $2.6 million from the governing body, helped cover the financial gap in Canada head coach Kevin Rouet’s strategic plan. The Canadian women’s team, ranked second globally, reached the final on Sept. 27, ultimately losing 33-13 to the top-ranked England at Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium.

The fundraising initiative generated $1.06 million through donations and commitments from more than 1,500 contributors, including community rugby clubs, the Monty Heald Fund of the Canadian Rugby Foundation, and substantial donations from individuals. Kevin Rouet expressed gratitude, stating, “This support significantly impacted our performance both on and off the field. Our goal was not just to participate but to secure victory in the Rugby World Cup, and this campaign provided us with the necessary resources.”

The funds facilitated two additional pre-tournament training camps, the first in Chula Vista, Calif., in May before the Pacific Four Series, and the second in Perth, Ont., in July ahead of test matches in South Africa. Additionally, the money supported travel expenses, accommodations outside of the World Cup, nutritional provisions, and additional medical and strength training resources during the tournament.

Rugby Canada’s CEO, Nathan Bombrys, emphasized the campaign’s success in uniting the nation and surpassing the $1 million objective, describing it as both exceptional and humbling. Despite the achievements, Kevin Rouet acknowledged ongoing budget constraints for the Canadian team, stating that maximizing resources each year remains a constant challenge.

Looking ahead, Rouet anticipates potential budget reductions post-2025 due to upcoming major events like the Men’s World Cup in 2027 and the Olympics in 2028. He remains optimistic about the team’s future prospects, acknowledging the federation’s improving financial stability over the years. Rouet concluded, “While challenges persist, progress is evident, and I am grateful for the continued support we receive.”

The Canadian women’s rugby team’s remarkable journey and accomplishments are seen as an inspiration for future players within the rugby community, showcasing the potential for growth and development in the sport.
