Two right-leaning contenders were virtually tied for the top spot in the presidential race in Honduras, with around 55 percent of polling stations reporting their votes by early Monday, according to preliminary data. The election took place shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump intervened in a tight race by endorsing one of the candidates and announcing a pardon for a former president.
The National Electoral Council reported that Nasry (Tito) Asfura of the National Party had secured 40 percent of the votes in the initial count, while Salvador Nasralla of the conservative Liberal Party followed closely with about 39.78 percent. Rixi Moncada of the democratic socialist LIBRE Party trailed behind with 19.49 percent.
Both Asfura and Nasralla refrained from claiming victory, noting that it was still early in the counting process. Despite the initial excitement at their campaign bases, the streets of Tegucigalpa, the capital, remained calm on Sunday night as the vote tally progressed slowly.
Asfura, a 67-year-old former mayor of Tegucigalpa who received Trump’s endorsement, ran as a practical politician, emphasizing his popular infrastructure initiatives. On the other hand, Nasralla, a 72-year-old sportscaster, had aligned with various parties over the years and had previously been on the ticket with the current president, Xiomara Castro.
Nasralla expressed confidence in the remaining vote count when the preliminary results were announced late Sunday, stating that the race was still too close to call. He sought to leverage Trump’s involvement to strengthen his image as an outsider, despite this being his fourth attempt at the presidency.
Trump’s endorsement of Asfura on Friday focused on his ability to combat drug trafficking and implied consequences if he did not win. Additionally, Trump announced a surprising pardon for former President Juan Orlando Hernández, who was serving a lengthy sentence in the U.S. for aiding drug traffickers.
The move sparked criticism from Democrats, with Senator Tim Kaine describing the pardon as “shocking” and highlighting concerns about Trump’s approach to narcotrafficking. The involvement of Trump in the election and the pardon decision stirred controversy, with fears of potential unrest following the vote.
