Rapper Mystikal Sentenced to 20 Years for Rape

Date:

Mystikal, the renowned rapper with several Grammy nominations in the early 2000s, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for raping a woman at his Louisiana residence in 2022. The artist, whose real name is Michael Lawrence Tyler, entered a guilty plea for third-degree rape in March, facing a maximum sentence of 20 years, which is five years less than the potential penalty for the offense. Initially charged with first-degree rape, carrying a life sentence, Mystikal’s plea deal led to a reduced charge.

In a last-minute attempt before his sentencing hearing, the rapper sought to retract his guilty plea, citing insufficient time to weigh the consequences adequately. The victim, who bravely addressed the court prior to the sentencing, urged the judge to impose the maximum sentence on Mystikal. She recounted the harrowing experience of being physically assaulted and raped at his Prairieville home, located approximately 29 kilometers from Baton Rouge.

Despite the serious allegations, Mystikal’s legal representative has not yet responded to requests for comments. Since his arrest in 2022, the rapper has been held without bail at the Ascension Parish Jail. Known for hits like “Shake Ya A**,” which garnered a Grammy nomination in 2000, Mystikal gained national fame in the 1990s. Notably, in 2003, he pleaded guilty to sexual battery, resulting in a six-year prison sentence. That same year, he received Grammy nominations for his album “Tarantula” and the single “Bouncin’ Back (Bumpin’ Me Against The Wall).”

For immediate assistance or if there is a risk to personal safety, individuals are urged to call 911. Support services and crisis lines can be accessed through the Ending Sexual Violence Association of Canada database.
