President Vladimir Putin stated in a recent interview that Russia is prepared to take control of Ukraine’s Donbas region by force if Ukrainian forces do not withdraw, a proposition that Kyiv firmly opposes. The deployment of tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine in February 2022 followed years of conflict between Russian-backed separatists and Ukrainian forces in Donetsk and Luhansk, the two regions that make up the Donbas area.
Putin emphasized the need to either reclaim the territories through military means or have Ukrainian troops vacate the area. However, Ukraine has rejected the idea of ceding its own territory to Russia, especially since Moscow has been unsuccessful in gaining control through warfare. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has advocated against rewarding Russia for instigating the war.
Despite Russia currently controlling nearly 20% of Ukraine, including Crimea and parts of various regions, discussions with the United States regarding a potential peace agreement have revealed Russia’s desire to dominate the entirety of Donbas. Russia also expects informal recognition of its control from the United States.
In 2022, Russia declared the regions of Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia as part of its territory following referendums deemed invalid by the West and Kyiv. Most countries still recognize these regions, along with Crimea, as belonging to Ukraine. Following talks with U.S. envoys, Putin acknowledged the acceptance of some U.S. proposals regarding Ukraine and emphasized the importance of ongoing negotiations.
Tragic incidents continue to unfold in Ukraine, with reports of civilian casualties due to Russian attacks. Recent missile strikes in Kryvyi Rih and Kherson resulted in injuries and fatalities, including the death of a six-year-old girl. Infrastructure damages have left thousands without essential services in various cities, with Russia intensifying attacks on Ukraine’s energy sector.
As the conflict escalates, the importance of safeguarding energy infrastructure has been stressed by Turkey, while tensions persist between Russia and Ukraine.
