PM Carney to Boost Trade at G20 Summit without Trump

Date:

Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to travel to South Africa for the G20 summit, where he aims to leverage the absence of U.S. President Donald Trump to advance trade discussions with other nations. A senior Canadian official revealed that Canada plans to collaborate with other countries on raising funds, promoting critical minerals, and forming ad hoc groups.

Carney is slated to engage in bilateral meetings with leaders from France, Norway, the European Union, Germany, the United Kingdom, and India during the summit. Trump’s decision to boycott the G20 has drawn criticism, with the White House confirming only a minimal U.S. presence at the event.

With the spotlight off Trump, Carney sees an opportunity to foster closer relationships and trade partnerships with various countries. The Prime Minister’s primary focus is on reducing Canada’s dependence on the U.S. market in light of ongoing American tariffs and economic uncertainties.

Carney’s agenda includes seeking foreign investment in Canada through key bilateral discussions, with plans to engage with Qatar, a significant investor globally. Furthermore, Canada aims to engage with the EU on the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, a trade pact involving Canada and ten other nations.

In addition to trade matters, Carney intends to emphasize Canada’s initiatives on critical minerals and advocate for collaborative efforts among countries in areas such as clean technology and international finance. The Prime Minister will also meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address bilateral relations and potential future cooperation.

Despite past tensions with India, Canada is taking a pragmatic approach to enhance ties with the country. The Canadian government aims to address shared concerns and explore areas of mutual agreement with India, recognizing the importance of diplomatic engagement.

As Carney navigates the international arena, building relationships and exploring trade opportunities remain key priorities for Canada’s economic diversification strategy.
