“Pigeons’ Navigation Secret: Liver Holds Magnetic Sensors”

Date:

Scientists have made a surprising discovery about how pigeons navigate, revealing a unique mechanism involving their livers. Throughout history, pigeons have been relied upon to deliver important messages over long distances. While it was known that these birds use various cues like the sun and visual landmarks for navigation, the mystery lay in how they utilize the Earth’s magnetic field.

Recent research led by Clivia Lisowski from the University of Bonn suggests that iron-rich immune cells in pigeon livers act as sensors for the Earth’s magnetic field, aiding in their navigation. This revelation stemmed from earlier findings in mice showing that immune cells in the spleen become magnetically sensitive due to iron accumulation.

The team found that macrophages in the liver, responsible for recycling and breaking down old red blood cells, contain high levels of iron. These cells are positioned near nerve fibers, potentially creating a pathway for transmitting magnetic information to the pigeon’s brain. By temporarily depleting these macrophages in pigeons, researchers observed a significant impact on their navigation abilities under overcast conditions.

Experts like David Bird from McGill University see this discovery as groundbreaking, suggesting that it could shed light on how other animals navigate. Scott MacDougall-Shackleton from Western University also finds the research intriguing, highlighting its potential implications for understanding our own sensory systems.

While this study opens up new possibilities in understanding navigation mechanisms, further research is needed to validate the findings and explore how magnetic information is processed and utilized by pigeons. Lisowski emphasizes that this research has unveiled a new perspective on the immune system, showcasing its sensory capabilities beyond traditional defense functions.
