“Pathways to Education Program Empowers Indigenous Students in Saskatoon”

Date:

As 18-year-old Rylan Iron prepares to graduate from Holy Cross High School in Saskatoon, he is looking ahead to his future plans, which include pursuing a three-year program in Indigenous studies at the University of Saskatchewan. Following that, he aims to further his education in Indigenous-focused law at a desirable location.

Iron, originally from Canoe Lake Cree First Nation, acknowledges the significant effort that has brought him to this point. He credits the Pathways to Education Program for providing crucial academic support and more, emphasizing that the program felt like a supportive family environment to him.

Pathways to Education, a national charitable organization operating in 31 communities, is dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty through educational initiatives such as after-school tutoring. Statistics show that Indigenous students face lower high school completion rates compared to non-Indigenous peers.

In Saskatchewan, the program collaborates with the Saskatoon Tribal Council and the Gabriel Dumont Institute to offer comprehensive resources, including food, transportation assistance, school supplies, and culturally relevant activities. Additionally, students and families benefit from sports mentorship, housing support, mental health services, and job readiness programs.

Students can enroll in the program in Grade 9 and upon graduation, receive a $2,000 reward. Currently, 350 Métis and First Nations students from various schools in Saskatoon are participating in the program.

Darlene Lanceley, the Pathways to Education manager for the tribal council, highlights the program’s unique incorporation of First Nations and Métis culture both inside and outside the classroom. Cultural activities such as powwows and medicine picking enhance the students’ learning experiences and connection to their heritage.

Iron emphasizes the importance of maintaining balance in all aspects of life, including education and cultural identity. The program operates in the evenings, providing students with meals and additional school support, as well as access to facilities like a gym, computer lab, and spaces for ceremonies and prayers.

Winona McLean, another student set to graduate from Saskatoon’s Bedford Road Collegiate through the Pathways Program, credits the initiative for boosting her confidence and improving her academic performance. She praises the program for helping her overcome challenges in subjects like math and science.

Lanceley believes that Pathways is instrumental in closing the graduation gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. She emphasizes the importance of supporting Indigenous youth to achieve academic success and build confidence for their future endeavors.

Iron expresses gratitude for the opportunities provided by the program and aspires to inspire others, particularly those in his community who may not have the same educational resources. He aims to give back and become a positive influence for future generations.
