A Grade 8 teacher in Ontario has admitted to charges related to luring and child pornography after using Snapchat to exchange nude images with former students.
Kelly-Anne Jennings, aged 41, entered a plea of guilty in a Peterborough, Ontario court, with parents of the victims present in the courtroom.
Jennings faced six charges in connection to incidents occurring in 2023, which included child luring, creating child pornography, and sharing sexually explicit content with a minor. The victims were identified as teenage boys who had been taught by Jennings.
During the court proceedings, Jennings acknowledged her guilt when questioned by Ontario Court Justice Nathan N. Baker.
The prosecution informed the court that additional charges, including one count of sexual assault, would be dropped at the Crown’s request.
It was revealed in court that Jennings, while under the influence of alcohol, had sent increasingly explicit images and videos, including footage of her engaging in sexual acts, to her former students via Snapchat. She also received nude images of the boys upon request.
A publication ban has been imposed to protect the identities of the victims and any details that could reveal their identities, including the school where Jennings worked.
Kelly-Anne Jennings, a former Grade 8 teacher in Port Hope, Ont., has pleaded guilty to luring and child pornography charges. She used Snapchat to send and solicit nude photos from former students.
A mother of one of the victims, speaking through a statement in court, expressed that her son viewed Jennings as a maternal figure who cared deeply for him.
She condemned Jennings’ actions as “predatory, manipulative, and severely damaging.” Crown attorney Julie Ann Barrett characterized Jennings as having exploited and manipulated the three boys to satisfy her own sexual desires.
Following the initial allegations, Jennings was placed on unpaid leave from her teaching position in Port Hope, part of Northumberland County near Toronto.
The Peterborough, Victoria, Northumberland, and Clarington Catholic District School Board announced that Jennings is no longer employed by the board, emphasizing the impact of the charges on the community.
According to school board spokesperson Mark Giunta, the well-being and safety of students and staff remain the top priority, with support being provided where necessary.
Despite being listed as a member in good standing on the Ontario College of Teachers website, Jennings faced charges initially in August 2024 after a male student disclosed inappropriate behavior during a class trip. Subsequently, three more individuals came forward with complaints, leading to additional charges.
The prosecution has recommended a four-year prison term for Jennings. However, her defense lawyer, Dean Embry, has requested a non-custodial sentence of two years less a day, followed by probation.
Jennings is scheduled for a court appearance on November 27.
