“NOAA Delays Satellite Data Cutoff Amid Hurricane Tracker Concerns”

Date:

Update as of July 31, 2025:

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration had scheduled to halt the distribution of microwave data collected from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program, a collaboration with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, by the end of June. However, this cutoff was postponed for a month, now set for July 31, 2025. In a statement on July 30, officials assured that there would be no disruption in the data supply.

A representative from NOAA stated that access to the program’s data would be maintained throughout its lifespan. Emphasizing that the microwave data is just one component of a comprehensive set of tools for hurricane forecasting and modeling at the National Weather Service, the spokesperson highlighted the agency’s commitment to providing top-tier weather forecasting services for the American public.

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced on Monday a one-month delay in the termination of satellite data crucial for tracking hurricanes. Last week, concerns were raised by meteorologists and scientists following NOAA’s initial announcement during the ongoing hurricane season that it would imminently cease the collection of vital data from three weather satellites jointly operated with the U.S. Defense Department.

The microwave data from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program plays a pivotal role by offering unique insights into storms that are not attainable through traditional satellite observations. This includes detailed three-dimensional storm information, internal dynamics, and nocturnal behavior, providing invaluable data for forecasting. Originally planned for shutdown on June 30 due to cybersecurity risks, NOAA has rescheduled the cutoff to July 31, just ahead of the peak hurricane season spanning from mid-August to mid-October.

NOAA did not elaborate on the reason for the delay in response to queries, while the U.S. Navy confirmed the updated timeline, citing that the program no longer aligns with their modern information technology standards.

NOAA, under significant budget cuts this year, stressed the importance of the satellite program as part of a comprehensive suite of tools for hurricane forecasting and modeling within the National Weather Service. The agency assured that despite the changes, they possess a robust array of data sources and models to maintain high-quality weather forecasting services for the nation.

Environment and Climate Change Canada communicated to CBC News that they do not anticipate any adverse impact on their forecasting accuracy following the suspension of U.S. satellite data. They underlined their reliance on diverse tools and collaborative efforts with other agencies and global meteorological organizations to ensure continued provision of timely and reliable hurricane forecasts for Canadians.

Scientist Marc Alessi from the Union of Concerned Scientists emphasized the critical role of the data in detecting rapid storm intensification and accurately predicting storm paths, especially in the context of worsening extreme weather events due to climate change. Alessi highlighted the indispensable nature of the satellite data for effective monitoring of global warming trends and enhancing forecasting capabilities.

Traditional satellite imagery captures storm structure, intensity, and temperature, but lacks the depth of information provided by microwave data, which offers unique insights into storm dynamics and behavior, particularly during nighttime observations. The loss of this data poses a significant challenge for meteorologists in accurately assessing storm details, akin to missing crucial information in a medical diagnosis that could impact preparedness and response strategies for impending hurricanes.
