“NHL Suspends Coach Mitch Love for Season”

Date:

The NHL has imposed a season-long suspension on Mitch Love following an inquiry into allegations that surfaced during his application for various head coaching positions across the league. Love, who had been an assistant coach under Spencer Carbery with the Washington Capitals for the past two seasons, was terminated by the team in conjunction with the league’s decision. The Capitals did not disclose specifics regarding the investigation but emphasized their commitment to upholding high standards of behavior and responsibility.

In response to what it deemed as conduct detrimental to the league, the NHL suspended Love and initiated a comprehensive investigation. Love will have the opportunity to seek reinstatement for the 2026-27 season upon meeting specific conditions. Aged 41 as of June, Love was considered a strong contender for coaching roles in Pittsburgh and Seattle, having previously led the Calgary Flames’ American Hockey League affiliate before joining the Capitals.
