NHL star Brad Marchand surprised attendees at a Halifax U18 hockey game by stepping in to support a close friend who recently lost his daughter. JP MacCallum, the head coach of the March and Mill Company Hunters, is mourning the passing of his 10-year-old daughter, Selah Panacci-MacCallum, after her battle with cancer.
Despite being in the midst of the NHL season with the Florida Panthers, Marchand didn’t hesitate to return home and stand in for MacCallum on the team’s bench. He expressed deep sorrow over Selah’s passing, highlighting her remarkable spirit and the profound impact she had on those around her.
Over a thousand people gathered at the Halifax Forum to show their support for the grieving family. Marchand, who has been friends with JP for 25 years, emphasized the strong bond they share and how JP has been a pillar of support throughout his life.
The Panthers fully endorsed Marchand’s decision to be with his friend during this difficult time. The game served as a fundraiser, with proceeds from a bake sale, 50-50 draw, and jersey auction going towards supporting Selah’s family. Paul Graham, the president of the U18 Major Hockey League, commended the community for rallying around the MacCallum family in their time of need.
Graham noted that Marchand’s immediate response to support MacCallum reflects his deep-rooted connection to his hometown and the people who have been there for him. The event showcased the solidarity and support within the Nova Scotia hockey community, highlighting the importance of standing together during times of hardship.
