The court was presented with a recording of an interview conducted by Halton regional police in January 2023, where J.L. recounted instances of being restrained with zip ties and a hockey helmet during tantrums by the accused, Brandy Cooney and Becky Hamber. He also described being monitored through security cameras and locked in his room at night alongside his deceased brother, L.L.
Both Cooney and Hamber have denied the charges of murder, confinement, assault with a weapon, and failure to provide the necessaries of life to J.L. The prosecution alleges that the women, who the boys referred to as mom and mama, subjected the children to abuse and neglect. Witnesses testified that L.L. was found unresponsive, malnourished, and emaciated in a locked basement room and later died in the hospital. The defense contends that the couple did their best to care for children with challenging behaviors and minimal support from authorities.
During his testimony via video link, J.L. shared details of the household routines, including exercise schedules and activity windows. He mentioned being restrained multiple times during tantrums and fed pureed food as a form of punishment. J.L. also revealed being confined to his room, forced to wear a wetsuit, and monitored by security cameras, all under the guise of maintaining discipline.
In a subsequent interview with police, J.L. disclosed that Cooney and Hamber presented a different facade to Children’s Aid Society workers, dressing him in regular clothes to conceal the true living conditions at home. The Crown intends to present more evidence from this interview during the ongoing trial, which has featured testimonies from various professionals and is expected to continue until early December.
