A container ship, MSC Baltic III, stranded on Newfoundland’s west coast, sustained damage from high winds and storm surge in recent days, as per the Canadian Coast Guard. The agency’s latest update highlighted a significant deterioration in the vessel’s port side due to extreme weather conditions. Moreover, they observed notable shifts in both the bow and stern sections of the ship.
The MSC Baltic III originally ran aground in Cedar Cove near Lark Harbour on the island’s western shoreline back in February. Subsequent cleanup and salvage operations have been ongoing. Just last week, Bruce English, the senior response officer from the Marine Environmental and Hazards Section of the Canadian Coast Guard, estimated that the ship might not be refloated until at least the following summer due to the remaining oil in its tanks.
On Friday, the salvage team reported damages to their equipment aboard the Baltic III, with debris sighted in the water and along the shore. Crews were dispatched to assess the extent of the damage on Saturday.
