MP Chris d’Entremont Leaves Conservative Caucus

Date:

Nova Scotia Member of Parliament Chris d’Entremont announced his departure from the Conservative caucus, citing a lack of alignment with Leader Pierre Poilievre’s approach to politics. Expressing discontent with what he perceived as a negative tone within the party, d’Entremont hinted that other Conservative MPs might follow suit and switch to the Liberal camp.

During a press conference alongside Prime Minister Mark Carney, d’Entremont emphasized the importance of effective leadership in addressing Canada’s challenges. He highlighted the need to focus on constructive solutions and collaboration rather than criticism. The MP, known as a Red Tory, praised Carney’s budget, particularly its provisions for key industries in his Nova Scotia constituency.

Despite allegations from Conservative colleagues regarding personal disagreements, d’Entremont maintained that his decision was motivated by a belief in Carney’s leadership. Carney, in turn, commended d’Entremont’s move and emphasized the importance of unity in the face of economic uncertainties.

Upon joining the Liberal caucus, d’Entremont received a warm reception, with MPs showing support and enthusiasm for his decision. The move brings the Liberal Party closer to a potential majority in the House of Commons. However, Government House leader Steven MacKinnon hinted at the possibility of a Christmas election if opposition members oppose the budget.

Notably, Industry Minister Mélanie Joly revealed that the Liberals had been engaging with d’Entremont for several years before his decision to switch parties. Liberal MPs expressed admiration for d’Entremont’s choice, emphasizing the personal nature of his decision and the need for support during this transition.

While Conservative MPs criticized d’Entremont’s move as a betrayal and questioned the motives behind it, supporters of the MP praised his courage and commitment to what he believes is best for Canada. The political landscape remains dynamic, with ongoing discussions and reactions to d’Entremont’s floor crossing.
