Officials announced on Monday that migrants who had been permitted to reside in the United States through an online appointment application are now required to depart the country immediately. The exact number of individuals affected by this directive remains uncertain.
Since January 2023, over 900,000 individuals have entered the U.S. using the CBP One app. This app was a key element of the Biden administration’s strategy to establish and broaden legal avenues for entry into the U.S., aiming to deter illegal border crossings and large groups arriving at the southern border after traversing Central America.
Individuals accepted into the U.S. via the app were typically granted a two-year stay in the country with work authorization under a presidential parole authority.
The Department of Homeland Security media affairs unit stated that revoking these paroles aligns with the government’s commitment to safeguard national security and fortify border security.
Although authorities confirmed sending termination notices to CBP One beneficiaries, they did not disclose the exact number. These individuals were encouraged to voluntarily depart using the rebranded app, now known as CBP Home.
The Department of Homeland Security communicated to a Honduran family that arrived in the U.S. towards the end of 2024, urging them to leave the country. The Associated Press verified the email received by the family on Sunday.
Similar emails have been shared on various social media platforms by other affected individuals.
Expansion of Fine Implementation
By the end of December, a total of 936,500 people had entered the U.S. through CBP One appointments at border crossings with Mexico. Former President Donald Trump terminated CBP One for new entrants on his inauguration day, leaving thousands stranded in Mexico with scheduled appointments into early February.
The Department of Homeland Security criticized Biden’s extensive use of parole authority, stating that it exacerbated the severe border crisis in U.S. history.
Conversely, the Trump administration’s plans include imposing fines of up to $998 US per day on migrants under deportation orders who fail to leave the U.S. They also intend to seize assets from non-compliant individuals, as indicated in documents examined by Reuters.
As immigration raids and arrests continued across the U.S., the White House press secretary said the administration considers all undocumented migrants criminals.
In response to inquiries from Reuters, Tricia McLaughlin, a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokesperson, emphasized that undocumented immigrants should utilize the rebranded CBP One, now known as CBP Home under the Trump administration, to voluntarily leave the country.
