Midnight Oil Drummer Rob Hirst Dies at 70

Date:

Australian rock band Midnight Oil made an announcement on Tuesday revealing the passing of their esteemed drummer and co-founding member, Rob Hirst, at the age of 70. Hirst had been bravely battling illness for nearly three years before finding peace, surrounded by loved ones, as shared by the band in a heartfelt Facebook post. The band also encouraged donations to charities dedicated to pancreatic cancer research and support.

The band’s enduring members, Peter Garrett, Jim Moginie, and Martin Rotsey, expressed their profound sorrow at the loss of their bandmate, referring to Hirst as a brother and emphasizing the enduring impact of their shared musical journey.

Originating in the early 1970s with members residing in Sydney and Canberra, Midnight Oil gained prominence with the release of their eponymous debut album in 1978. Their socially conscious stance and global influence were solidified with the release of 1987’s “Diesel and Dust,” which included the iconic track advocating for Indigenous rights, “Beds Are Burning.”

Despite facing challenges and victories along the way, Midnight Oil persisted in their musical endeavors, releasing albums like “Blue Sky Mining” and “Earth and Sun and Moon,” which further cemented their reputation in the music industry. Hirst played a significant role in crafting the band’s music, often collaborating with Moginie, while Garrett contributed as the primary lyricist.

The band’s impact extended beyond music, as they engaged in charitable endeavors and supported environmental causes. Additionally, Midnight Oil’s influence was recognized internationally, with a notable presence in Canada and collaborations with renowned artists such as The Tragically Hip.

While the digital era posed challenges to traditional album sales, Midnight Oil continued to produce music until 2002 when Garrett transitioned into politics. Despite their individual pursuits, the band periodically reunited for tours and released their most recent album, “Resist,” in 2022.

Following Hirst’s cancer diagnosis in April 2023, the musician underwent treatments and remained active in charitable initiatives, such as auctioning his cherished Ludwig drum kit for a noble cause. Reflecting on the band’s enduring legacy, Hirst emphasized their commitment to advocating for justice alongside other influential musicians.

Tributes poured in from various quarters, including Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and fellow musicians, commemorating Hirst’s talent, spirit, and lasting impact on the music industry. Midnight Oil’s legacy endures through their music and unwavering dedication to social causes.
