Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Wednesday that she had lodged a criminal complaint against a man who groped and attempted to kiss her while she was greeting the public. The incident, captured in a viral video, was deemed a crime by Sheinbaum, who highlighted the prevalent issue of such behavior towards women in Mexico.
Sheinbaum, the first female leader of Mexico, expressed concerns about the safety of women in the country, emphasizing the impact of such actions on society. The video circulated rapidly on social media, shedding light on the challenges women face in a country marked by machismo and gender-based violence.
The incident also raised questions about Sheinbaum’s security arrangements. Similar to her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Sheinbaum maintains minimal security and actively engages with the public. Despite the incident, she affirmed her commitment to remaining accessible to the people.
The video depicted a man approaching Sheinbaum, putting his arm around her, touching her inappropriately, and attempting to kiss her. She managed to deflect his advances before a member of her staff intervened. Notably, her security detail was not in close proximity at the time.
Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada confirmed the man’s arrest following the incident. Sheinbaum criticized the publication of images by Mexican newspaper Reforma, considering it a violation and requesting an apology for what she deemed as re-victimization.
Under Sheinbaum’s leadership, the federal Women’s Ministry has encouraged women to report violence while urging media outlets to refrain from disseminating content that compromises women’s dignity. However, critics have highlighted Sheinbaum’s perceived inadequacies in addressing violence against women, citing issues such as insufficient investigations into femicides.
The groping incident coincided with Sheinbaum meeting the widow of a slain mayor from Michoacán state, underscoring the ongoing challenges of public safety and organized crime in Mexico. Grecia Quiroz, the widow, is set to assume her late husband’s position amid heightened security measures in the aftermath of the assassination.
The authorities have apprehended individuals linked to the mayor’s killing and committed to ongoing investigations to bring the perpetrators to justice. The incidents have reignited discussions on women’s safety and violence in Mexico, prompting calls for heightened awareness and action on these crucial issues.
