Mae Martin to Host Historic 55th Juno Awards

Date:

Comedian Mae Martin has been selected to host the 55th annual Juno Awards, as announced by organizers on Thursday. Following their successful 2024 hosting role at the Canadian Screen Awards and the premiere of their Netflix show, “Wayward,” they will make history as the first solo comedian to host the event since Russell Peters in 2009.

Reflecting on their journey from being a nervous 13-year-old guest on a radio show to now hosting the prestigious event at the age of 38, Martin expressed their excitement. They aim to bring a relaxed and lively atmosphere to the ceremony, akin to a vibrant live music performance.

Scheduled for March 29 in Hamilton, this year’s Juno Awards will feature performances by acclaimed artists such as Daniel Caesar and William Prince. Additionally, music legends Joni Mitchell will receive a lifetime achievement award, and Nelly Furtado will be inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

The upcoming Juno Awards mark a significant moment for Canadian arts and culture, emphasizing the country’s unique artistic contributions amidst international pressures. The event serves as a platform to celebrate and showcase the diverse and valuable Canadian creative output.

Changes in award categories for this year’s ceremony include the introduction of the Latin music recording of the year category and updated eligibility criteria for rap album/EP and rap single of the year to prioritize Canadian talent. These adjustments aim to spotlight local artists and support the growth of Canada’s hip-hop community.

Set to take place at the renovated TD Coliseum in Hamilton, the 55th Juno Awards will be broadcast live on various CBC platforms on March 29 at 8 p.m. ET, including CBC-TV, CBC Gem, CBC Radio One, CBC Music, and CBC Music’s YouTube Channel.
