Actor Kiefer Sutherland was taken into custody early Monday following a report of an altercation involving a ride-hailing driver, as confirmed by authorities. The incident occurred shortly after midnight near Sunset Boulevard and Fairfax Ave., just south of Hollywood Hills. Los Angeles police stated that the 59-year-old Emmy-winning Canadian actor engaged in physical violence against the driver after entering the ride-hailing vehicle and also issued criminal threats towards the victim. Fortunately, the driver did not sustain any significant injuries requiring medical attention. Sutherland was subsequently arrested on suspicion of criminal threats and later released on a $50,000 US bond. His initial court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 2. Despite an email requesting comment, there has been no immediate response from Sutherland’s representatives.
Renowned for his role as federal agent Jack Bauer on the Fox TV series “24” and its various spinoffs, Sutherland has also appeared in iconic films like “The Lost Boys,” “Young Guns,” “Stand by Me,” and “A Few Good Men.” Born into a family of actors, Sutherland is the son of Donald Sutherland and Shirley Douglas, with his grandfather being former Saskatchewan premier Tommy Douglas, credited for introducing universal healthcare in Canada.
