Eric Meyer, the editor and publisher of the Marion County Record in rural Kansas, recently spoke out about the vindication his newspaper achieved after a court-approved agreement led to Marion County agreeing to pay over $3 million US for its involvement in a controversial raid on the newspaper’s offices in 2023. The raid, conducted by local police and county sheriff’s officers, sparked concerns about press freedom.
Meyer emphasized the importance of standing up against bullies, stating that yielding to them only emboldens their behavior. He shared how the raid not only targeted the newspaper but also extended to his 98-year-old mother, Joan Meyer, who passed away the day following the raid due to sudden cardiac arrest, with the stress of the incident believed to have been a contributing factor.
The police raid, which included searching through reporters’ desks and seizing electronic devices, was triggered by allegations that the newspaper unlawfully obtained a local restaurateur’s driving record. However, Meyer clarified that the newspaper had received the information through a tip and had not committed any illegal actions. Despite deciding not to publish the information, the raid ensued.
Following the raid, the newspaper faced further scrutiny after publishing an investigative piece on then-police chief Gideon Cody. Cody, who later resigned amid felony charges, had initially defended the raid. However, two special prosecutors found no criminal wrongdoing by the newspaper, its staff, or a former city council member also targeted in the raid.
As part of the settlement agreement, Marion County will compensate the estate of Joan Meyer, Eric Meyer, former reporters, and the business manager of the Record. The former city council member will also receive a significant sum. Additionally, the sheriff’s office issued an apology as part of the resolution.
Meyer highlighted the broader issue of powerful individuals targeting journalists, noting a concerning trend in the U.S. where journalists face bullying and accusations of spreading fake news for fulfilling their journalistic duties. He stressed the importance of resisting such attacks on press freedom.
