“Iconic ‘Brady Bunch’ House Designated Historic Monument”

Date:

In a unanimous decision on Wednesday, the Los Angeles City Council officially designated the iconic Brady Bunch house in the San Fernando Valley as a historic-cultural monument. The house, located on Dilling Avenue, served as the backdrop for exterior shots of the popular TV sitcom that aired from 1969 to 1974. While interior scenes were filmed on a soundstage, the actual house has become a must-visit spot for fans of the show.

The classic shingle-and-stone home with its distinctive peaked roof also made appearances in the 1995 film The Brady Bunch Movie and its sequel. The landmark status now safeguards the 1959-built property from demolition or significant alterations, although it does not outright prohibit them. Should the owners opt for major changes, they would be required to undergo a design review, and any modifications would need to align with preservation guidelines.

Pushed by the non-profit LA Conservancy, the landmark designation was met with enthusiasm by CEO Adrian Scott Fine, who emphasized the emotional connection fans share with the property. He expressed delight over the approval, highlighting the significance of the house to those who grew up watching the show. The property has become a pilgrimage site for enthusiasts seeking to relive the Brady Bunch nostalgia.

The house gained further attention in 2018 when it was put up for sale, leading to a bidding war that saw HGTV securing the property for $3.5 million US, surpassing the initial listing price by $1.6 million. The cable network embarked on an extensive renovation project to recreate the iconic interior elements from the show, such as the wood-paneled living room and the vibrant orange-and-green kitchen. This transformation journey was captured in the HGTV miniseries titled A Very Brady Renovation.
