The resurgence of portable gaming systems in the current year presents a changed landscape compared to their peak popularity in past decades. All major gaming hardware companies, including Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft, now offer handheld devices in the market alongside other manufacturers.
A recent holiday survey commissioned by the Entertainment Software Association of Canada revealed that 16% of children requested gaming handhelds like the ROG Ally and the Steam Deck portable computer as Christmas gifts. In contrast, 46% opted for a home console, such as the Nintendo Switch 2.
ESAC President Paul Fogolin emphasized the growing interest in handheld devices, despite their relatively small market share, due to the introduction of new devices. The survey highlighted a significant desire for the Steam Deck, indicating a rising interest in PC gaming.
Each of the mentioned handheld devices, including the Nintendo Switch 2, Microsoft Xbox ROG Ally and ROG Ally X, and Sony PlayStation Portal, offers distinct features catering to gamers on the go. The choice among these devices depends on various factors that users should consider.
The Nintendo Switch 2, released in June 2025, serves as an upgraded version of the popular original Switch, offering enhanced performance and versatility. It appeals to fans of Nintendo’s iconic franchises like Mario and Zelda, with backward compatibility for previous Switch games.
On the other hand, Microsoft’s Xbox ROG Ally and ROG Ally X, launched in October 2025, introduce a gaming-focused PC experience in a portable form factor. Designed for Xbox and PC gaming enthusiasts, these devices provide access to a vast library of games on the go, albeit at a higher price point.
Sony’s PlayStation Portal, released in November 2023, stands out as a streaming-only device that complements the PlayStation ecosystem. Offering remote play and cloud streaming capabilities, it targets budget-conscious gamers looking to access PlayStation games on the move.
Furthermore, boutique PC brands have entered the handheld gaming market with offerings like the Steam Deck, providing unique experiences for PC gaming enthusiasts. Retro handheld devices, such as the Analogue Pocket, cater to nostalgia-driven gamers seeking classic gaming experiences in a modern form factor.
As the gaming industry evolves, the availability of diverse handheld gaming options offers consumers a wide range of choices to suit their preferences and gaming needs.
