A man from South Korea is currently cycling across North America, embarking on a journey from British Columbia to Montreal, with the assistance of generous Canadians. Seongmin Ji, outfitted in black attire and a navy blue hat, may seem like an ordinary cyclist tackling the scenic Sea to Sky Highway from Whistler to Vancouver. However, his bicycle stands out as he has adorned it with license plates from various locations such as Alaska, Utah, Guatemala, and British Columbia.
Having already cycled the entire west coast of South America, Central America, and North America at the age of 28, Ji is now aiming to cover over 5,000 kilometers to reach Montreal in a span of two months. His motivation for this challenging journey is driven by a desire for self-discovery, pushing his limits, and inspiring others along the way.
Commencing his route from Ushuaia, Argentina, Ji pedaled to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, and then hitchhiked to Kitwanga, British Columbia. From there, he continued his journey southward to Squamish, with plans to head to Washington next. Despite not undergoing any specific training, Ji embarked on his cycling adventure right after purchasing his bike.
Upon arriving in Canada, Ji has been relying on the kindness of strangers who offer him accommodation. He utilizes a platform called Warm Showers, a website connecting touring cyclists with locals, to secure places to stay during his journey. Throughout his travels in British Columbia, Ji has been amazed by the friendliness of the people, the stunning natural landscapes, and the abundance of clean water.
During his stay in Smithers, British Columbia, Ji was hosted by Rory Luxmoore and his family, forging a positive impression. Luxmoore commended Ji for his maturity, passion, humility, and peaceful demeanor, despite his remarkable accomplishments. Ji also had the opportunity to join a group of local cyclists for a ride, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie.
Ji first learned about the Sea to Sky region while watching the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and has since appreciated the warm reception and love for cycling in British Columbia. Fueling his journey with podcasts and peanut-butter sandwiches daily for nearly a year, Ji draws strength from the support he receives from kind-hearted individuals along the way.
Expressing his gratitude for the assistance he’s received, Ji mentions that he always reflects on the generosity of those who have aided him during his cycling expedition. Additionally, he draws inspiration from Canadian icon Terry Fox and aspires to run across South Korea for a cancer charity upon his return.
