“Gaspereau Press Embraces Small-Scale, Local Focus Under New Ownership”

Date:

In Tantramar, N.B., a converted garage in Keagan Hawthorne’s backyard is currently serving as the operational base for Gaspereau Press, a renowned Canadian literary publisher. Hawthorne, who is in the process of taking over the ownership of the boutique publishing company, emphasizes the importance of maintaining its small-scale, local focus.

Founded in 1997 in Kentville, N.S., Gaspereau Press has gained a reputation for its handcrafted approach to printing and binding books, appealing to writers both locally and internationally. Despite being a small operation, the company has made a significant impact in the literary world.

In the past, Gaspereau Press faced challenges when the popularity of Johanna Skibsrud’s novel, “The Sentimentalists,” which won the Giller Prize in 2010, exceeded expectations. While the increased demand posed difficulties for the press, they remained committed to their local ethos, even when offered opportunities for expansion.

Hawthorne, a poet himself and a supporter of the company’s artisanal bookmaking process, likens it to the craftsmanship of furniture making, emphasizing the importance of quality in literature presentation.

As Gaspereau Press transitions under Hawthorne’s leadership, plans are underway to relocate to a local warehouse, with some aspects of the production process likely to be outsourced. However, the company’s dedication to handcrafted elements remains unchanged, ensuring that every book continues to receive personal attention and care.

The move to Sackville, a community known for its academic and cultural vibrancy, is seen as a strategic decision for Gaspereau Press. Hawthorne highlights the town’s supportive environment for artists and creators, citing affordability and a conducive atmosphere for experimentation.

Although changes are on the horizon for the publishing house, including a shift towards outsourcing certain tasks, the essence of Gaspereau Press’s handcrafted approach and commitment to quality remains at the core of its operations.
