Nestled off the coast of Newfoundland, Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, a French archipelago, offer a captivating blend of natural beauty and European allure. Despite its small size of 242 square kilometers, the islands exude a rich history and distinct character. Visitors can stroll through cobblestone streets, encounter freely roaming horses, and uncover remnants of its storied past involving rum-running activities.

Josephine Jobert, a French actress, and Allan Hawco, representing Newfoundland, stars of the CBC’s latest drama series Saint-Pierre, had a remarkable experience filming on the archipelago. They shared insights on their time there, living amidst the island’s unique setting, where their characters are “brought together to solve distinctive crimes.” They also uncovered hidden treasures, ranging from delightful French cuisine to a nostalgic discotheque where one can dance the night away.

This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity.

Could you share your impressions of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon and how you familiarized yourselves with the region during your stay?

Josephine Jobert: Prior to my visit, I had minimal knowledge about this place. It was a significant journey for me to explore a different facet of my country.

It felt somewhat familiar with the French bakeries, wine, and cheese – elements that resonated with home. However, the isolation on the island, in a positive sense, offered a sense of protection from the external world. The locals lead a distinct lifestyle, unbothered by external opinions, embracing their unique customs and traditions.

Allan Hawco: Newfoundland shares a special bond with Saint-Pierre and Miquelon. We have faced moments of isolation together in the vast Atlantic, fostering mutual dependency for essential services and goods.

The historical ties between Saint-Pierre and Newfoundland have always felt like a familial connection, bordering on a sibling relationship. The filming experience unveiled the island’s authentic beauty, blending modernity with seclusion, a true revelation.

The locals exhibit a strong sense of self-awareness and comfort in their identity, reflected in their minimalist approach with no excessive signage or visual distractions, urging visitors to explore and adapt to their lifestyle.

What activities did you enjoy off-set? Share your experiences discovering the island’s nightlife and culinary scene.

Jobert: We indulged in shopping, a perilous endeavor once you uncover the diverse offerings on the island.

The restaurants are exceptional, and the retro disco, reminiscent of the ’80s, provided us with a memorable night of dancing.

Hawco: The authenticity of the disco, untouched by extensive renovations, was intriguing.

While inspecting the disco with my colleague, we marveled at the operational lights, contemplating ways to revive them, a fascinating experience.

Jobert: Exploring the island, interacting with the ubiquitous horses, provided a unique charm. The island’s restaurants, displaying a commitment to culinary excellence, impressed us with their meticulous approach to food preparation and presentation.

The island’s vibrant nightlife and intriguing establishments create an otherworldly atmosphere, akin to stepping into a parallel dimension.

How has your time filming in Saint-Pierre influenced your perception of the region?

Hawco: Following the first season’s filming, I have developed a deep affection for Saint-Pierre, despite not fully delving into all it has to offer.

I had underestimated the charm of
