“Filmmaker Drew Hyttenrauch Spotlights Down Syndrome Care in Windsor”

Date:

Filmmaker Drew Hyttenrauch seized a remarkable opportunity to produce a significant project while shedding light on the growing needs within the Down syndrome community, a cause close to his heart as he shares the journey with his sister, Natalie. In a recent venture in Windsor, Ont., they collaborated on a commercial for the Canadian Down Syndrome Society (CDSS) campaign during Down Syndrome Week.

The commercial emphasized the challenges faced by individuals with Down syndrome as they age, with the narrator highlighting that only one percent of Canadians with Down syndrome reached 40 years of age in 1950. Natalie, in the commercial, advocated for the care that individuals with Down syndrome deserve, pointing out that although 30% of the population is now over 40, health care systems have not evolved accordingly.

The CDSS is currently fundraising for an accredited course that aims to provide specialized training in Down syndrome care, addressing the existing health equity gap. Down syndrome, a chromosomal condition associated with chromosome 21, affects over 22,000 individuals in Canada, with common health concerns including heart conditions, gastrointestinal issues, thyroid problems, and respiratory infections.

Drew and Natalie Hyttenrauch, both in their 30s, have personal experiences with health and aging concerns related to Down syndrome. Drew, who runs a production company in Windsor, expressed that this project was the most meaningful and fulfilling endeavor he has undertaken, given his personal connection to the cause.

The commercial, featuring individuals with Down syndrome in everyday scenarios like enjoying coffee with friends, aimed to showcase their thriving lives and challenge stereotypes. Drew highlighted the collaborative effort that led to the production of the commercial, emphasizing the support from local businesses and the high production standards achieved.

Natalie, an integral part of the project, shared her experiences and emotions about the filming process, expressing some initial embarrassment but ultimately receiving praise from Drew for her performance. Personal support worker Natalie Hall, who works with Natalie Hyttenrauch, emphasized the importance of PSWs expanding their services to support adults with Down syndrome, calling for more exploration in this area of healthcare.

The impactful commercial not only raises awareness about the challenges faced by individuals with Down syndrome but also aims to promote inclusivity and understanding within the community.
