“Farmers Fight Back Against Radar Project Threat”

Date:

Rachel Brooks and her family were enjoying life on their 40-hectare farm, located around 130 kilometers north of Toronto, until they received an unexpected letter from the Department of National Defence (DND).

The letter had a profound impact on Brooks’ sense of security regarding her home and property that they had worked hard on for 45 years. DND had reached out to Brooks and other farmers in the region, inquiring about the possibility of selling their properties to accommodate a large-scale radar project.

Despite the offer, Brooks is firm in her decision not to sell her property and disrupt her family’s life.

The proposed radar project in Clearview Township, near Stayner, aims to establish a massive radar site spanning over 1,600 hectares (4,000 acres) for the Arctic Over-the-Horizon Radar (A-OTHR), part of a substantial $38 billion investment to enhance Canada’s NORAD contribution.

The community’s anxiety and fear have risen due to the project’s uncertainty and potential impact on residents’ lives. Residents seek clarity from DND on land expropriation and compensation if they opt not to sell their properties.

A few kilometers away from the Brooks’ farm is the Hutchinson family farm, which has been in operation since 1879. The family is concerned about the project’s impact on their agricultural legacy.

The Hutchinsons feel paralyzed by the uncertainty, hindering their ability to plan for the future on their farm.

With DND already owning a portion of the land required for the project, the looming question for many farmers is the potential outcome if they refuse to sell their properties.

DND has assured fair compensation and a smooth acquisition process but hasn’t confirmed plans for land expropriation at this stage.

Government Accountability Questions

Residents, alongside MP Terry Dowdall, question the project’s transparency and the government’s intentions, especially regarding land acquisition and potential expropriation.
