“FANXIETY: Expert Insights on Intense Sports Reactions”

Date:

The tension felt by fans during intense moments in sports isn’t just in their heads, according to medical experts who have experienced the physiological effects firsthand.

Referred to as “fanxiety” by a cardiologist, this phenomenon is captured in social media videos showing fans reacting intensely to pivotal moments in various sports. When fans watch their favorite teams play, their brains receive signals from their eyes and ears, triggering a physical response due to their emotional investment, explained Greg Wells, a scientist specializing in exercise physiology at Sick Kids Hospital.

Despite teaching others how to remain composed under pressure, Wells confessed to experiencing a range of emotions while watching games, including throwing objects and shouting. He described how successful plays trigger the release of endorphins, leading to feelings of joy, while disappointments can result in genuine emotional distress.

The uncertainty of outcomes in sports matchups, such as a prolonged pitcher versus batter confrontation, can leave spectators feeling anxious as their bodies prepare for a fight-or-flight response. This physiological reaction involves an increase in heart rate, breathing, and blood pressure, fueled by stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol.

Studies have indicated that watching high-stakes games can have a significant impact on spectators. Dr. Jacob Udell, a cardiologist at Women’s College Hospital and Toronto General Hospital, compared the physical response of watching sports at home to that of engaging in a moderate workout, highlighting the substantial effects on heart rate.

For individuals with existing heart conditions or risk factors, such as heart rhythm abnormalities, it is crucial to adhere to prescribed medications during intense sporting events. Such events can elevate blood pressure and stress levels, potentially triggering chest pain or palpitations in vulnerable individuals.

In such cases, seeking immediate medical attention is advised. Dr. Udell recommended employing relaxation techniques like box breathing or visualization to alleviate strain on the cardiovascular system during stressful situations, whether it be a congested commute or an exhilarating sports event.

Ultimately, pacing oneself and finding enjoyment in the experience is key to managing the physiological effects of intense sports viewing, as suggested by medical experts.
