FAA Orders Inspection of MD-11 Aircraft After UPS Crash

Date:

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a directive halting the operation of MD-11 aircraft for inspection after a tragic UPS cargo plane crash in Louisville, Kentucky, claimed the lives of at least 14 individuals. UPS and FedEx have voluntarily grounded their combined fleet of over 50 McDonnell Douglas MD-11 cargo planes in response to Boeing’s recommendation.

The emergency airworthiness directive from the FAA follows the incident on Tuesday, where the left engine and pylon detached from the UPS plane during takeoff, prompting concerns about flight safety. The cause of the detachment is currently under investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the tragedy.

UPS has complied with the FAA directive by grounding its 26 MD-11 planes, constituting approximately nine percent of its total fleet. Boeing has expressed support for the FAA’s order, as the company inherited the MD-11 program from its merger with McDonnell Douglas in 1997.

Authorities anticipate that comprehensive engine and pylon inspections will be necessary before the affected planes can resume operations. The National Transportation Safety Board is spearheading the investigation into the crash of the 34-year-old MD-11 freighter at the Louisville airport, which occurred as the aircraft was departing for Honolulu with three people on board.

Witnesses described a harrowing scene as the plane caught fire during takeoff, with the left engine detaching from the wing before the aircraft ultimately crashed. Despite efforts by the UPS pilots to regain control, the plane could not be averted from its tragic fate, resulting in a devastating loss of life.

The aftermath of the crash left a trail of destruction, with flames engulfing the plane and spreading to nearby establishments. The aviation industry is now focused on understanding the circumstances that led to this catastrophic event and ensuring the safety of future flights.
