Upon learning about Etsy’s recent policy change, Lisa Pottle, a jewelry maker, expressed disappointment as she had just acquired rabbit and foxtail fur for her earrings. Pottle, who operates the Etsy shop Spirit Sisters By Lisa, integrates beads and fur into her creations.
In an email sent to sellers on April 2, Etsy informed that the platform will prohibit the sale of fur starting in August as part of its biodiversity initiatives. This policy expansion adds fur to Etsy’s existing animal product restrictions, which previously only covered species under U.S. Endangered Species Act or CITES Appendix I.
Effective August 11, all products containing fur from animals primarily hunted for their pelts must be removed from Etsy stores. Notably, the ban excludes taxidermy and byproduct materials like leather.
Pottle, who relies on her shop for income and sells about 15 items monthly, voiced her concerns over the policy change. She emphasized the significance of fur earrings to her cultural heritage as an Inuk from Nunatsiavut, now residing in Nova Scotia.
Indigenous communities are expected to be significantly impacted by the ban, according to Doug Chiasson, the executive director of the Fur Institute of Canada. Chiasson criticized the decision and highlighted the potential adverse effects on artisans working with fur and sealskin.
Despite contemplating a shift to Shopify, Pottle plans to continue selling fur earrings on Etsy until the ban takes effect in August. She expressed disappointment over the timing of the policy change, as she had intended to introduce a new earring design.
