Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers Returns Award Over Censored Speech

Date:

Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers has decided to return the Toronto Film Critics Association Award she received after part of her acceptance speech showing support for Palestine was edited out.

The TFCA’s president, Johanna Schneller, mentioned that the Canadian actor and filmmaker’s speech was shortened due to time constraints but acknowledged Tailfeathers’ resignation following the incident.

Tailfeathers, who won for outstanding supporting performance in a Canadian film for her role in Melanie Oates’ drama “Sweet Angel Baby,” was not present at the gala on Monday and had submitted a video acceptance speech that she claims was censored.

Expressing her disappointment in an email to the TFCA, Tailfeathers stated that she was returning the award as she followed the guidelines provided for filming her speech.

Schneller expressed regret over Tailfeathers’ decision to return the award, clarifying that the speech edits, including those for other recipients, were made to ensure the event’s timing.

However, Tailfeathers argued that her reference to the Palestine conflict was merely two sentences long and felt that her words were intentionally muted and censored.

The incident prompted multiple resignations within the TFCA, with members such as critics Adam Nayman, Saffron Maeve, Sarah-Tai Black, and film writer Radheyan Simonpillai stating their departure from the group on social media.

In the segment of her speech that was omitted, Tailfeathers mentioned the impact of the October 7th events on the filming of “Sweet Angel Baby” and expressed solidarity with the people of Palestine, condemning ongoing atrocities.

Having previously won Canadian Screen Awards, including Best Director for “The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open” in 2019, Tailfeathers emphasized in her email that she refuses to be silenced on the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Acknowledging the suffering of individuals in the Jewish community due to antisemitic violence, she underscored the importance of combating all forms of discrimination, including Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian sentiments.

Tailfeathers extended her support to those within the Jewish community who speak out against Palestinian oppression, commending their courage.

She concluded her email by quoting Fatima Hassouna’s words, expressing solidarity with Palestinian artists and filmmakers.

The conflict reference in Tailfeathers’ speech relates to the Israeli offensive in Gaza, triggered by the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack that led to casualties in Israel and hostage situations, with ongoing tensions until a ceasefire agreement in October 2025.

The Gaza Health Ministry reported casualties from the conflict, with a significant number being women and children, though precise figures regarding civilians and militants are not explicitly provided.
