DOJ Probes Epstein Ties to Clinton, JPMorgan

Date:

The U.S. Department of Justice announced plans on Friday to investigate Jeffrey Epstein’s alleged connections with former President Bill Clinton and JPMorgan, following a request from President Donald Trump. The move is seen as an attempt by Trump to divert attention from his own ties to the late financier and convicted sex offender.

Attorney General Pam Bondi stated that Jay Clayton, the top federal prosecutor in Manhattan, will lead the investigation. This decision comes shortly after a congressional committee released a trove of documents raising concerns about Trump’s relationship with Epstein and marks another instance of Trump calling for federal law enforcement to target his perceived political adversaries.

The Epstein scandal has been a persistent issue for Trump, who has promoted conspiracy theories about Epstein to his supporters. Allegations have circulated among Trump voters that officials, including Bondi, have concealed Epstein’s connections to influential individuals and obscured details surrounding his death in a Manhattan jail in 2019.

In addition to Clinton, Trump has urged the Justice Department to look into former treasury secretary Larry Summers and Reid Hoffman, the founder of LinkedIn and a prominent Democratic donor. All three individuals were mentioned in the 20,000 documents pertaining to Epstein released by the House oversight committee.

Trump took to social media to highlight Epstein’s ties to the Democratic Party and emphasized that the issue belonged to the Democrats, not the Republicans. JPMorgan expressed regret over its past association with Epstein as a client from 1998 to 2013 but stated that it did not assist him in committing any wrongful acts.

Clinton’s deputy chief of staff, Angel Urena, defended Clinton, stating that the emails confirmed Clinton’s lack of involvement or knowledge of any wrongdoing. Hoffman, in a social media post, called on Trump to disclose all Epstein-related files, asserting that his interactions with Epstein were solely for fundraising purposes for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The Justice Department’s decision to comply with Trump’s request comes despite a previous memo from July indicating no grounds for investigating uncharged third parties in the Epstein case. The memo emphasized the lack of incriminating evidence or indications that Epstein engaged in blackmail of prominent individuals.

Trump and Epstein were acquaintances in the past, but Trump claimed to have severed ties before Epstein’s 2008 guilty plea. Despite allegations and revelations, Trump has consistently denied any knowledge of Epstein’s illicit activities involving underage girls. The upcoming House of Representatives vote on legislation to compel the release of all Epstein-related materials is anticipated to pass, amid ongoing scrutiny and pressure on the issue.

JPMorgan settled with Epstein’s victims for $290 million in 2023, resolving accusations of negligence in addressing his sex trafficking activities. No credible evidence has linked Clinton, Summers, or Hoffman to Epstein’s illicit actions, with all parties refuting any wrongdoing and expressing remorse for their associations with him.

Epstein’s extensive network included interactions with various notable figures, such as Prince Andrew of the U.K., whose connections to Epstein led to his royal title being revoked. Trump’s utilization of the Justice Department to investigate political adversaries has raised concerns among legal experts, with some questioning the appropriateness of such directives from the president.

Clayton, an independent figure who previously chaired the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission during Trump’s first term, will oversee the investigation into Epstein’s connections as requested by Trump.
