Cuba has reported that it successfully restored power to its electrical grid following a partial collapse that plunged Havana and western Cuba into darkness on Wednesday. This incident is part of an ongoing energy crisis that has resulted in widespread blackouts lasting for extended periods, affecting millions of residents.
Officials disclosed that a key transmission line between Havana and the largest power plant in Matanzas failed around 5 a.m. ET. By midday, workers had managed to reestablish power to approximately 40% of Havana. Despite the outage impacting four western provinces, including Pinar del Rio and Mayabeque, all areas were swiftly reconnected to the grid.
Even before this recent blackout, Cuba had been grappling with daily power outages lasting up to 20 hours. Havana, previously shielded from severe outages, now faces regular electricity cuts of over 10 hours daily. Authorities cautioned that due to a significant shortfall in power generation, ongoing blackouts are expected to persist despite transmission line repairs.
As darkness enveloped Havana’s waterfront skyline prior to sunrise, only select facilities like hotels and hospitals were illuminated by generators. Cell service became sporadic, and street lights remained unlit during the outage.
The country’s outdated oil-fired power plants, struggling to meet energy demands, faced a major crisis last year due to diminishing oil imports from Venezuela, Russia, and Mexico. Cuba’s power grid has experienced multiple collapses, attributed to fuel shortages, aging infrastructure, and damage from events like Hurricane Melissa.
Persistent U.S. sanctions and a deep economic downturn have hindered the government’s ability to procure sufficient fuel, leading to reliance on foreign allies. Data indicates a more than 30% decline in crude and fuel imports in the first ten months of this year compared to the previous year, as Mexico and Venezuela reduced supplies.
The recurrent grid failures underscore the challenges Cuba faces in maintaining its electricity supply amidst external pressures and internal constraints.
