Crafting Vulnerability: Supergirl’s Struggle with Power

Date:

Similar to many narratives involving powerful characters, the challenge with Supergirl lies in crafting an engaging storyline for a character with seemingly effortless abilities.

However, the most obvious solutions that Supergirl explores are often the most difficult for the audience to accept. These solutions involve portraying the all-powerful character burdened with artificial challenges to create a sense of vulnerability and relatability.

This common dilemma manifests in different ways, such as the ultra-strong hero inexplicably facing obstacles against weaker opponents or choosing isolation to evoke emotional depth. It also includes scenarios where the character voluntarily relinquishes their powers to experience life from a human perspective.

Interestingly, the issue of portraying overpowering characters has been cleverly tackled in unexpected places like the early-2000s webcomic, minus. Rather than dwelling on the complexities of superhuman abilities, minus satirizes the conventional narrative tropes that writers often rely on to drive their stories.

Supergirl hits theatres Friday and follows the successful reboot of Superman last summer. Actress Milly Alcock plays Superman’s kid cousin, Kara Zor-El, who goes on an interstellar adventure with an unlikely companion. CBC’s Jackson Weaver shares his review of the latest DC superhero movie.

A child in the webcomic minus humorously dismisses the notion of having superpowers and instead embraces the idea of a normal human life. This satire underscores the appeal and wonder of possessing superhuman abilities, debunking the common narrative challenges faced by characters like Superman and Supergirl.

In line with the longstanding dilemma of portraying powerful heroes like Superman, Supergirl struggles to offer a fresh perspective on the inherent difficulties of being an exceptionally gifted being. The film commences with Supergirl (Milly Alcock) depicted in a turbulent state, reminiscent of the character Hancock, as she embarks on a reckless journey across the cosmos.

This narrative unfolds as Supergirl grapples with emotional detachment from humanity, leading her to isolate herself physically from her loved ones and the source of her powers, the yellow sun. Subsequently, she reluctantly assumes the role of protector for Ruthye (Eve Ridley), a mortal but determined warrior seeking vengeance for her family’s tragic fate.
