“Chinese Electric Vehicles Making Inroads into Canadian Market”

Date:

Starting March 1, Chinese-made electric vehicles gained access to the Canadian auto market. However, popular brands like Polestar, Volvo, and Tesla are expected to make their way into Canada before BYD or Chery EVs. Peter Frise, a mechanical and automotive engineering professor at the University of Windsor, mentioned that Chinese EVs from brands already present in Canada would arrive sooner.

Chinese electric vehicles, such as BYD, Chery, and Geely, are known for their affordability due to cheaper materials, lower labor costs, and government subsidies. Although China produced 12.4 million EVs in 2024 and aims for global sales of 40 million EVs, their overcapacity for manufacturing drives the need to export. With a limit of 49,000 Chinese-made EVs allowed in Canada at a 6.1% tariff rate, manufacturers are expected to prioritize exporting higher-profit models.

Addisu Lashitew, an associate professor at McMaster University, indicated that well-known brands like Tesla, Polestar, and Volvo could arrive in Canada soon, whereas Chinese brands might face a longer permitting process. Streamlining procedures could be beneficial to avoid reciprocal delays by China in trade relations.

For Chinese vehicles to be approved for the Canadian market, they must comply with safety regulations. The approval process involves registration with Transport Canada’s Appendix G Pre-clearance Program, ensuring vehicles meet Canadian regulatory requirements. While BYD has obtained clearance, other Chinese manufacturers’ approval timelines remain uncertain.

Transport Canada and Global Affairs were contacted for details on approval timelines, but responses were not received by the deadline. Chinese auto manufacturers were also reached out to for comments, with no responses provided. Polestar mentioned they are evaluating ongoing developments, while Tesla did not respond to inquiries.
