Canadians have secured several nominations for the Actor Awards, the annual accolades from SAG-AFTRA that recognize outstanding performances in Hollywood films and television/streaming shows. The nominations were unveiled by Connor Storrie from “Heated Rivalry” and Janelle James from “Abbott Elementary.”
Both Seth Rogen and Catherine O’Hara have received nominations for their exceptional leading roles in the Apple TV series “The Studio,” which was created by Vancouver-native Rogen. Martin Short is also nominated in the leading actor category for his role in Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” competing against Rogen.
“The Studio” and “Only Murders in the Building” are both nominated for outstanding ensemble performances in a comedy series. The awards ceremony will be broadcast live on Netflix from Los Angeles on March 1.
The Actor Awards, previously known as the SAG Awards, act as a precursor to the Academy Awards. The film “One Battle After Another,” directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, leads with a record-breaking seven nominations in the movie categories. The film is contending for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture alongside “Frankenstein,” “Hamnet,” “Marty Supreme,” and “Sinners.”
Each principal cast member of “One Battle After Another” has been nominated in individual acting categories. Leonardo DiCaprio, Timothée Chalamet, Michael B. Jordan, Ethan Hawke, and Jesse Plemons are competing for best actor in a leading role. Chase Infiniti, portraying DiCaprio’s daughter, is nominated for best actress.
In addition, “One Battle After Another” has nominations for supporting actress Teyana Taylor and supporting actors Benicio del Toro and Sean Penn. The film competes against the record of five nominations received by any movie in the 31 years of the SAG Awards.
“The Studio” leads in the series categories with five nominations, continuing its successful streak after winning multiple Primetime Emmys for a comedy series last year. The series also received nominations for lead actors Ike Barinholtz and Seth Rogen, as well as lead actresses Kathryn Hahn and Catherine O’Hara.
In the comedy series ensemble category, “The Studio” will face competition from “Abbott Elementary,” “The Bear,” “Hacks,” and “Only Murders in the Building.” In the drama category, “The White Lotus” secured the most nominations, including outstanding ensemble, competing against “The Diplomat,” “Landman,” “The Pitt,” and “Severance.”
“The White Lotus” also earned nominations for actresses Parker Posey and Aimee Lou Wood, as well as actor Walton Goggins.
