Canadian national team fullback Alistair Johnston has undergone hamstring surgery following a setback in his recovery from an injury. The 27-year-old player, hailing from Aurora, Ontario, sustained the initial injury during Glasgow Celtic’s Champions League match against Kairat Almaty on August 20. Although he returned to play against Sturm Graz on October 23, he had to leave the game after just 23 minutes.
Johnston, who has represented Canada in 56 matches and has been a prominent player under coach Jesse Marsch, shared the news of his surgery on social media. Expressing his challenges over the past few months, he stated that the surgery was successful in repairing his hamstring, hoping it marks the beginning of overcoming this injury completely.
Furthermore, Johnston’s teammate at Celtic, Callum Osmand, also underwent hamstring surgery. Interim manager Martin O’Neill confirmed that both players will face a long period of recovery. O’Neill mentioned that Johnston’s surgery was necessary after a scan revealed damage and a tear in his hamstring.
Coach Marsch is currently dealing with the absence of several other players ahead of upcoming friendlies against Ecuador and Venezuela in November. The injured list includes team captain Alphonso Davies, Moise Bombito, Sam Adekugbe, Jacob Shaffelburg, Liam Millar, and Luc de Fougerolles.
