“Canadian Consumers Embrace Buy Canadian Movement”

Date:

In early 2025, following the initiation of tariffs by the U.S. on Canada, Francine Piché has actively avoided purchasing American goods. Residing in Burlington, Ontario, Piché has prioritized Canadian and non-U.S. products over American ones whenever feasible. She has altered her personal care brand preferences, terminated her Amazon membership, and scrapped plans for a New York trip to withhold her spending from the U.S., except in cases where alternatives are unavailable.

However, with the recent enforcement of new 50% U.S. tariffs after failed trade negotiations, Piché has firmly resolved not to make any further exceptions. Her family intends to discontinue American streaming service subscriptions upon renewal, and she plans to forego certain gluten-free U.S.-made foods despite the absence of substitutes. Piché emphasized, “My determination is unwavering. It’s my way of pushing back.”

The resurgence of the Buy Canadian movement has gained momentum as consumers, prompted by renewed trade tensions, shift towards Canadian products. The movement has seen a notable increase in traffic on platforms like the Made in Canada Facebook group, where discussions now delve into various shopping habits and Canadian sourcing alternatives.

The O SCANada app, developed by Ryan Checora, has witnessed a surge in downloads, with over 4,000 new installations over a weekend. Checora expressed satisfaction at the growing interest among Canadians in understanding product origins. He remarked, “Traction is steadily building up again.”

While some consumers prioritize price over product origin, others like Peace by Chocolate, based in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, have experienced increased support. Founder Tareq Hadhad noted a 500% rise in website traffic amidst the current Buy Canadian movement, emphasizing the surge in backing for Canadian brands.

Although uncertainties persist due to the trade war, Hadhad, who ceased shipments to the U.S., emphasized the importance of non-American support. He highlighted the significant impact of consumer spending habits and expressed confidence in the enduring support for Canadian products.

The current wave of the Buy Canadian movement appears more resolute, with consumers recognizing the influence of their purchasing decisions. Hadhad emphasized the enduring spirit of Canadians, stating, “They can impose tariffs on Canadian goods, but they cannot diminish the essence of Canada.”
