Renowned for his captivating storytelling, Alan Bradley, the author behind the popular Flavia de Luce mystery series, passed away at the age of 87 on the Isle of Man, as confirmed by his publisher, Penguin Random House Canada, on Tuesday.
Born in Toronto in 1938, Bradley grew up in Cobourg, Ont. After studies at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute (now Toronto Metropolitan University) and a career as a television and radio engineer, he joined the University of Saskatchewan faculty. For 25 years, he taught and eventually became the Director of Television Engineering before retiring in 1994 and relocating to Kelowna, B.C., with his wife, Shirley.
Transitioning to full-time writing in Kelowna, Bradley penned various works including short stories for both children and adults, the memoir “The Shoebox Bible,” and the nonfiction book “Ms. Holmes of Baker Street,” co-written with William A.S. Sarjeant, proposing the idea of Sherlock Holmes being a woman.
Notably, Bradley’s literary success surged in his late 60s with the introduction of Flavia de Luce, a precocious 11-year-old character who evolved into the central figure of the bestselling mystery series that bore her name. Flavia’s vibrant persona even surprised Bradley as he penned her adventures, with his wife often exclaiming about Flavia’s audacious actions.
Flavia’s youthful vigor and curiosity enabled her to unravel mysteries and spot nuances that eluded adults. Bradley attributed Flavia’s charm to the sense of invincibility and wonder he remembered from his own youth, where anything seemed possible.
“The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie,” the inaugural book in the Flavia de Luce series, achieved immediate success, garnering multiple prestigious crime and mystery awards. With 11 books in the series, it has sold over six million copies and been translated into 36 languages.
Despite the accolades, Bradley found the most gratification in the impact his books had on young readers, particularly girls inspired to pursue science careers after encountering Flavia’s adventures.
