“Bald Eagle Count in Kings County, N.S. Soars”

Date:

An annual bald eagle count in Kings County, N.S., recorded a significant increase in the number of bald eagles this year. The event, held annually in February, identified 605 bald eagles, which is more than double the count of 265 birds in 2023. This figure is notably higher than the mere 22 eagles observed in the region back in 1977.

Soren Bondrup-Nielsen, the organizer, attributed the surge in sightings to a positive environmental development. He explained that the historical use of DDT pesticides had adverse effects on the eagle population due to DDT poisoning through contaminated prey, which affected egg production. The banning of DDT in the 1970s in Canada led to a remarkable recovery of the bald eagle population.

Bondrup-Nielsen, a naturalist, noted that eagle numbers in the Annapolis Valley vary annually. He suggested that the unusually cold winter this year might have contributed to the high count, as eagles were seen feeding on Canada geese and ducks that had frozen on the ice.

Volunteers participated in the eagle count by spreading out on designated driving routes, recording every bald eagle spotted within an hour. The tallying of results provided valuable insights into the ecological well-being of the area and the impact of human activities on it. Bondrup-Nielsen emphasized the importance of this tradition in monitoring environmental health.

The presence of Acadia University in the vicinity has facilitated a strong volunteer base, given the high number of naturalists in the region. This active involvement reflects the community’s commitment to preserving nature and wildlife.

The one-hour duration of the count aims to minimize repetitive sightings and ensure accurate data collection. This initiative serves as a crucial method to monitor the ecological balance and understand the consequences of human interference on the environment.
