After a frightening crash last year, Mikaela Shiffrin, the American skiing sensation, approached training with heightened caution due to the potential risks involved. Shiffrin, who suffered serious injuries in a World Cup giant slalom event, emphasized the unpredictability of training conditions and the need to balance the necessity of practice with safety concerns.
Similarly, French skier Alexis Pinturault echoed Shiffrin’s sentiments, acknowledging the unsafe nature of many training locations. The safety dialogue in Alpine skiing intensified following the tragic death of Matteo Franzoso during preseason training in Chile, shedding light on the hazards faced by athletes.
Shiffrin, a decorated champion, opened up about the mental challenges she encountered post-injury and the importance of assessing and mitigating life-threatening risks in the sport. She emphasized the disparity in safety standards between training and race courses, citing factors like limited safety netting and medical resources on training slopes.
Italian ski racer Sofia Goggia likened ski racing to extreme sports like F1 and MotoGP, emphasizing the inherent risks involved. Goggia highlighted the need for enhanced safety measures on training courses and urged for better organization and accountability in ensuring athlete safety.
In response to the tragedies, the Italian Winter Sports Federation called for dedicated training courses with improved safety features similar to those seen in World Cup races. FIS President Johan Eliasch emphasized the ongoing efforts to enhance safety standards, including increased medical support and better course preparation.
Despite challenges in funding safety upgrades, Eliasch mentioned FIS’s financial support to member federations for this purpose. Athletes and coaches emphasized the importance of collaboration among nations and federations to create safer training environments and prevent future accidents.
As discussions continue on improving safety standards in Alpine skiing, the focus remains on finding practical solutions to minimize risks and enhance the well-being of athletes on and off the slopes.
