Canada’s Alphonso Davies, the team captain, made a comeback for Bayern Munich after a 262-day absence due to a significant knee injury. The 25-year-old player from Edmonton entered the game as a substitute in the 88th minute during Bayern’s 3-1 victory over Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League match at Allianz Arena.
Josip Stanisic initially played as the left back for Bayern against Sporting Lisbon, but Davies hinted on the Film Never Lies podcast that coach Vincent Kompany might include him in the game. Davies mentioned uncertainty about his playing time, leaving the decision to the coach.
Davies replaced Serge Gnabry, a German international and one of Bayern’s goal scorers. His last game was in March when he sustained the injury while representing Canada against the United States in a CONCACAF Nations League third-place match. The injury involved ligament tears and other damages in his right knee.
Following the injury, Bayern expressed dissatisfaction with the Canadian national team, claiming that Davies had not received proper medical evaluations for his injury before traveling back to Germany.
