Isiah Whitlock Jr., a renowned actor known for his roles in HBO’s The Wire and Veep, as well as several Spike Lee films, passed away at the age of 71 in New York after a brief illness. Whitlock portrayed the openly corrupt state Sen. Clay Davis in 25 episodes of The Wire, where he popularized the character’s iconic catchphrase, “sheee-it.”
Director Spike Lee expressed deep sadness over Whitlock’s passing, highlighting their close bond developed over years of collaboration on films such as She Hate Me, Red Hook Summer, Chi-Raq, BlacKkKlansman, and Da 5 Bloods. Lee fondly recalled their time shooting Da 5 Bloods in Thailand and cherished moments spent together, emphasizing Whitlock’s infectious personality that brought joy to those around him.
Aside from his acting prowess, Whitlock’s comedic talents were praised by colleagues and fans alike. His ability to make people laugh, both on and off the screen, left a lasting impact on those who knew him. Whitlock’s passing comes shortly after the death of fellow The Wire star, James Ransone, who played Ziggy Sobotka on the show.
Originally from South Bend, Indiana, Whitlock pursued acting after a football injury during his time at Southwest Minnesota State University. His career began with small television roles and minor film appearances before landing significant parts in acclaimed series like The Wire and Veep. Whitlock’s portrayal of Secretary of Defence George Maddox in Veep garnered further acclaim and showcased his versatility as an actor.
