Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Wednesday that Ukraine had reached agreements on key elements of a post-war reconstruction plan following discussions with Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of U.S. President Donald Trump, along with other high-ranking officials. The talks focused on an “economic document” during a meeting with Kushner, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and BlackRock CEO Larry Fink.
Rebuilding Ukraine after the devastation caused by Russian air raids and ground combat has become a crucial aspect of the negotiations for a resolution to the long-standing conflict. Zelenskyy emphasized that the economic document’s principles were well-defined and aligned with the American side, highlighting the importance of prioritizing security for successful reconstruction and economic growth post-war.
In collaboration with Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, Ukrainian officials, and senior military officers, Zelenskyy reported progress on a comprehensive 20-point document aimed at ending the war. Additional documents addressing security guarantees and economic matters were also being developed.
Jared Kushner has emerged as a central figure in facilitating peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. The establishment of an investment fund for strategic sectors, including rare metals, has been a significant aspect of Ukraine’s reconstruction plans, with Svyrydenko playing a pivotal role in its formation.
Amid ongoing discussions, Ukraine, supported by European allies, has resisted a U.S.-backed peace proposal perceived as favorable to Moscow. Kyiv is seeking robust security assurances from its allies to deter potential Russian aggression.
Zelenskyy expressed readiness to hold elections within three months if the security of the vote could be ensured by the U.S. and other allies. Despite facing pressure to expedite peace efforts, Zelenskyy has dismissed the notion of holding elections amidst continued hostilities, displacement of civilians, and military confrontations.
The Ukrainian leader has firmly rejected ceding territory to Russia and, in collaboration with European allies, raised concerns about the U.S.-backed deal potentially favoring Moscow’s demands. A meeting is scheduled for Thursday among the “coalition of the willing” nations, led by France and Britain, to address the evolving situation.
Statements from U.S. officials challenging Europe’s alliance dynamics have raised uncertainties, with the release of a new U.S. National Security Strategy document prompting reactions from European leaders. French President Emmanuel Macron’s office confirmed a videoconference meeting of Ukraine’s allies to address the ongoing developments.
As diplomatic efforts intensify, Ukrainian troops have made strategic adjustments in response to Russian advances in the Pokrovsk region. While Russia claims to have captured Pokrovsk, Ukrainian forces continue to hold parts of the city, with ongoing military movements reported amidst challenging weather conditions.
